A transfer case is a component of your vehicle's drivetrain to split power between the front and rear axles. It's usually located just under the transmission, where our service team in Hobbs, NM can easily access it during repair or maintenance.

The transfer case has two different modes; 4WD and 2WD. When you're in 4WD mode, power from the engine is split between both axles; when you're in 2WD mode, power goes only to one axle, usually the rear.

There are several different kinds of transfer cases, but each works the same way. The output shaft connects to a chain, or belt, that turns another gearset that powers both axles. Some transfer cases have a center differential—this helps distribute power between both wheels on an axle when you're turning at high speeds.

Transfer cases are helpful for off-roading because they allow drivers to go places where their vehicles wouldn't usually be able to go with just one wheel providing all the traction needed for forwarding movement.
